What’s up Wednesday; how are you on this glorious hump day?!?! We are midway through the week and, well, how are you doing? Today, I want to talk about why wellness is my “love language” – but first, there is something I need to share.
I have not made any mention of this on my social media recently but it has been a tough few days. My grandmother – my Dad’s Mom – passed away last Saturday, and it has just been so sad. She is in a much better place, and we are all so thankful that her quality of life is much better now, but our hearts are broken. It doesn’t matter how prepared you can be, it still leaves you with an emptiness. What’s even more heartbreaking is that Covid has put so many restrictions in place – my Dad’s family lives in Canada & their lockdown is getting tighter by the day – that my immediate family and I will have to celebrate virtually. If Covid hasn’t robbed us enough…
My Mom always says that as we get older, we get more and more prepared (as best we can) for the circle of life. I feel like my 35 years young has gone by so incredibly fast, and when this happens, you just want it to stop even more. This is one of the ways that I grieve – I reflect on what was, all of the wonderful memories, and how I am going to preserve them moving forward. Man, this really sucks.
Let me shift gears back to to the topic at hand – why wellness is my love language. And, for the record, love language kept coming up for me as I wrote this post but it really has nothing to do with it. If you are interested in knowing my, ACTUAL, love language, it is a toss up – “Quality Time”/”Physical Touch” are tied, followed by “Words of Affirmation.”
When I started my journey in the influencer/public figure realm back in 2017, the one area that I did not want to tout was the one area that I lived and breathed – WELLNESS.
As a health and wellness professional for what was, then, going on 11 years, it seemed to really define me. While that was not a bad thing by any means, I was in this funk of needing to break out from “Janine Serio, fitness and nutrition guru, recently divorced, and yada, yada, yada.” It’s what people knew; it’s what Baltimore knew too! I wanted people to see a different side of me – the one that LOVES fashion, is a foodie, a beauty connoisseur, travel guru, adores a bajillion cups of coffee, a good martini/Cabernet, etc.
Over the last few years, I have focused on those areas outside of the other hat that I wear. Sitting here, in 2021, the roles have completely reversed. No one (really) knows me in the health & wellness arena anymore – my role with 2 Health Nuts has me much more behind the scenes and it is not something I talk about day in and day out.
The last few months I have seen a bit of a shift in my mindset when it comes to this – I have built 2 separate platforms yet I feel that I am losing part of my identity. I went to school for Exercise Science, I started my career in this field, and gained notoriety along the way. I don’t need to let this slip away (I would never let this happen); it’s at my core and, at the end of the day, it keeps me leveling up at the same time.
I have given push back over the years when team members have said that I need to talk more wellness because I can do it in my sleep. Yes, I completely understand this mindset but I felt that it was pulling my brand away from where I wanted it to go. And, as I mentioned, the last few months continue to have me saying the same statement…
Janine, it’s your “love language.”
Over this next year, you will see me drip feed wellness content right here on my blog. I will give it my spin to continue reflecting my brand but, also, share what has been such a huge part of my life too! Now that you know wellness is my “love language,” here is the brief Reader’s Digest version of “Janine Serio, Fitness & Nutrition Guru.”
