Whoop whoop! Gotta love how it is TUESDAY again, and we all know that that means!!! Anyone else a little gaga over a REALLY good craft cocktail and some authentic, “no junk,” Mexican cuisine? Umm, it has my vote! This week, I am chatting about a restaurant that I have already touted many times before on my social media but I had the chance to check out their Sunday brunch menu recently which included an oyster bar option too. Yes, Bar Clavel is one of my FAVORITE spots in BMORE.
Oh, and the place was just as crowded as usual, except, instead of the normal 75 minute wait time, it was 30-40 minutes. LOL.
Located in an eclectic area of Baltimore called “Remington,” Founder Lane Harlan, and Chef/Partner, Carlos Raba, bring their Sinaloan heritage to their always outstanding menu. As a family owned Taqueria and Mezcaleria (yes, the Mezcal is AMAZING), every ingredient is fresh, made from scratch, and provides a fabulous balance of Northern Mexican culinary cuisine and, of course, a piece of Baltimore too. From the corn and flour tortillas made from a 5th generation recipe, to the meats and seafood that are butchered in house daily, to the fabulous selection of ancestral Mezcal, artisanal cocktails, and an ambiance that is just LIVELY and FUN! Even the latest Hall of Fame inductee, Ed Reed, knows where the good grub is located; he came in with his entourage to eat too.
While the quality of the food was on point, the only downside to the brunch menu is that it does not have all of the usual items on that the main menu, such as there delicious Queso Fundido. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise. What was cool, though, is it was “Fiesta del Mar” day which, as I mentioned, featured oysters, whole fish, and ceviche! I started with the delicious “Mezcalita,” with the addition of 3 chili shrubs to bring on ‘da HEAT.
How fun is that? No wonder Bar Clavel is, always, being mentioned as having one of the BEST craft cocktail mixologists in the area!
One of their claim to fames is their chips, salsa, and guac. So delicious BUT, I admit, I eat the guac with my fork. Yes, I know, I, usually, get my own order because that is worse than double dipping. But, no shame with eating my guac with a fork game.
Next up came the “Tostada De Atun Con Pina” Ceviche – yellowfin tuna, avocado, pineapple, basil, and serrano – in addition to the tacos with homemade corn tortillas. Again, their brunch menu did not include the all of the usual fillings, I did manage to pick 2 delicious choices – an “oldie but goodie” and a new one too! One was a mixture of corn, mushrooms, queso, and squash blossoms, and the other was a combo of beef shank & pork and stewed in fresh and dried chilis (a go-to of mine).
Umm, okay, I kind of want to go back, like RIGHT NOW. I would even wait for 75 minutes. Plus, at a pretty reasonable price point to, you cannot go wrong! Invite me the next time you go? 🙂
